Cesarean section surgical illustration
Media: graphite, photoshop
It’s ironic that the baby’s head is never shown, when the surgery is all about getting the full term fetus out, but it never became necessary to show the head.

Cesarean section surgical illustration, with emphasis on suture layers

I’m fascinated by what medical illustrations leave out (as, it seems, are you.) I agree that it is very telling that the baby is completely left out of the equation. It goes without saying, perhaps, that the woman is also pretty well disembodied here.
Thanks for posting this!

Great observation, thanks for the comment! One goal in medical illustrations is show what’s necessary to visually communicate the point, but no more – and to not simplify so much that accuracy gets sacrificed. This illustration was aimed toward surgical residents/medical students to educate them about the surgical steps in a cesarean section, with focus on the suture layers. I’ve also done a patient education brouchure on this subject and the illustrations and content are handled much differently.
